quest four | you can't catch fish if you don't go fishing!

CHARACTERS: ALL ([community profile] holyrelic)
DATE: Aug 12 - 16 (extended due to RL punting the modchims)
RATING: KEEP IT G
SUMMARY: There's a fishing tournament being talked about around Mac Anu and Lumina Cloth. Do you have what it takes to be the Grandmaster Fisher?! ... But before that, there's bait to be found!

There's a buzz in the plaza and quite a few posters put out. It seems that with the dog days of summer upon everyone, it's also time to partake of a typical summer activity... Fishing! On the posters strewn throughout the Root Towns are the keywords ΔDelicious Unlimited Ocean. Once there, they'll be greeted by the sight of several islands all connected to a larger, 'main' island where the GMs are situated. Right in front of the Chaos Gate too, so there's no missing them. Good thing too, because they're handing out the fishing rods you need to complete this quest!

... But no bait?

A quick inquiry will net players the answer; defeat monsters to earn bait in order to catch fish for the salmon bake later! Okay, so maybe it wasn't a salmon bake but grilled fish does smell sound like a nice incentive right? Five of the islands branching off the main one has a small sign in front that indicate which levels they'll find there, starting from level 1 through 10 up to level 41 through 50 for the most daring. There's space all throughout the islands that seem to be designated 'safe spots' where one can start fishing without worrying about getting ambushed.

Go forth and catch that elusive Halibut for dinner!

[ooc: Okay, 2 things.

1) Event extended because Life hates your mods. 8'( Sorry this came up so late, folks.

2) All right! There are all sorts of fishes, but the fishes you'll be catching are of the monster variety. The dropped item will be a normal fish (re; salmon, halibut, tilapia, etc)! There are complimentary summer/beach costumes for all who participate and... quirky(?) fishbone/seafood themed weapons for everyone who catches a fish.

And before anyone asks, yes. Even that tiny little smelt can potentially net you a gigantic Broadsword]

[Layton was low-leveled, almost to the point of being ridiculous compared to a great many other players. It was quite the shock to find that these... 'levels' had such a large effect on what one could do.

Or maybe it had a lot to due with the fact that Hershel Layton had never encountered the internet before, nevermind a MMORPG]

Well, it is said that patience is a virtue. You might want to keep a better hold of that fishing rod there. One never knows what sort of surprises to expect.

[Even if this man has a point, Yuuta's not going to give in that easily. Instead, he wrinkles his nose a bit as he replies. He doesn't even bother to turn around to look at the man speaking to him.

Manners? What manners.]

Maybe if the fish actually bite. I don't even like fish.
apropergent: (As time passes by)

I said I'd do ittttttttt *3*

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-08-21 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
[It's quite all right. Layton's used to the occasional rebel student and takes the lack of manners in stride]

Perhaps the bait isn't drawing the fishes attention...

How about a puzzle to help you pass the time while waiting for a bite? I believe I have just the one.
isolates: (if you say so)

heee I'm glad *^*

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-21 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
[That's a bit weird but Yuuta shrugs because he's just sitting here doing nothing anyway so he might as well.]

I... guess so.

[He finally turns to look at the man questioningly.]

Let's see...

[a thoughtful pause]

Two fathers and two sons went fishing one day. They were there the whole day and only caught 3 fish. One father said, that is enough for all of us, we will have one each. How can this be possible?
isolates: (uh about that)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-21 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. [Yuuta furrows his brows a little as he thinks. From the way the question is phrased, you would think there's four people but if there were only three fish then...]

Isn't that because there's three generations? The grandpa and dad are both fathers and the grandchild and the dad are both sons.
apropergent: (In a new time we begin)

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-08-21 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
[a bit of clapping. Somehow, Layton manages to make it not sound patronizing at all. Nothing like a warm up puzzle after all] Well done! Perhaps that one was a bit too easy... But it always struck me as rather rude to pull out a difficult one with strangers.

Would you like another?
isolates: (you can depend on me)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-21 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Despite himself, Yuuta grins up at the man.] Yeah that was pretty easy. I wouldn't mind another one.

[Getting puzzles definitely seems like a good way to pass time for him now.]
apropergent: (The old days & future come and go)

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-08-21 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Another one to break the ice then? [HAHAHA, LAYTON THAT PUN IS AWFUL AND YOU SHOULD FEEL AWFUL--]

A doctor and a boy were fishing. The boy was the doctor's son, but the doctor was not the boy's father. Who was the doctor?
isolates: (gonna think about it)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-22 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
[As he tells his second riddle, Yuuta puts his fishing rod on the ground then turns his around so he now faces the man to give him his full attention.

When he's finish, Yuuta replies in a tone that slightly accusing.]

I thought you were gonna give me something tougher. That's still too easy. The doctor is his mom.

Never hurts to make sure. Now let me think...

This is a bit different from my usual puzzles, but somehow I don't think my usual fare will suit this world. [what? I can't really hand out sliding puzzles through text can I?]

I'm a slippery fish in a cloudy sea;
Neither hook nor spear will capture me;
With your hand you must hunt and seize this fish,
To see that it ends up in the dish.
isolates: (uh about that)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-22 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
[If you do manage to give out sliding puzzles through text, it would be pretty amazing.

But this time the riddle does make Yuuta think hard.]

A fish that can only be captured by hand... what kind of sea is cloudy? Must be dirty...

[He scratches his head as he continues to think and mutter to himself.]

[sliding text puzzles for the sixth Layton game!]

[While Yuuta thinks on it, Layton prepares his own fishing rod but stops to reconsider. Perhaps he should move to a lower level area for the fishes?]

That's the idea. Keep at it, my boy, I'm sure you'll get it in no time.
isolates: (kinda skeptical about that)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-23 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
[He tips his head from side to side as he thinks, trying to logic it out.]

Maybe it's not a fish at all but trying to get it out of water is like trying to catch fish.

Hmmmm in that case... Is it... a bar of soap?
apropergent: (The old days & future come and go)

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-08-24 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's right! Well done, my boy. [you get 25 picarats for that!] Critical thinking is the key to success.

Now that we've gotten this conversation rolling, I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Hershel Layton. Pardon my intrusion, but would it be wrong of me to assume that you've been here a while?
isolates: (this is amazing)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-28 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm Yuuta! And yeah. I've been here for either a few months or a year. Depending on how you look at it. [He grins.] So, so, do you like puzzles or something?
apropergent: (As time passes by)

1/2

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-08-28 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
A pleasure to meet you then, Yuuta-
apropergent: (When the joyous and sad times fade)

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-08-28 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
A few months to a year? Goodness... [definitely not what he was expecting, but all the Professor does after that (rather well-mannered and quiet outburst) is fix his hat]

Ahem, pardon me... But yes, you could say I'm a bit of a puzzle fan. Few things keep the mind sharper than a good puzzle.
isolates: (geh)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-29 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. There aren't a lot of people who've been here as long as that though.

[He's about to comment on Layton's statement about puzzles when suddenly he notices his fishing rod slowly sliding towards the water. Quickly, with reflexes boys his age usually don't possess, he turns around and lunges for it with a yelp of surprise. Putting it down earlier was obviously not a good idea.]

Crap!!
apropergent: (A strong gust hits our sails)

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-08-30 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Are there-

[Layton also caught sight of movement out of the corner of his eye. The professor's reflexes - while respectable for an average human - weren't all that impressive. But he reaches for the runaway fishing rod anyway, because one of them had to be able to catch it even if the other missed, right?]

Oh dear!

[... Layton, really?]
isolates: (we're doomed)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-08-31 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, while Yuuta's able to reach and grab hold of the fishing rod, his lunge puts him on his stomach and that's not a very good position to be in when one wants to try and keep from going in the water.]

Argh!!
apropergent: (A strong gust hits our sails)

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-09-01 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Falling into the water is no good! Just ask Sonic

The time that Yuuta buys for them both with his catching the fishing rod is enough to Layton to get there and help him keep a hold of said fishing rod (also possibly the boy)]

Oof! [eloquent] Are you all right there?

[one step at a time, yes. We will pull you up soon enough]
isolates: (this is amazing)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-09-01 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
I guess?!

[He's not sure but at least he's not in danger of getting pulled into the water anymore. The fishing rod is still fighting to free itself so it can fly into the water but with Layton's help, Yuuta's able to keep a firm hold on it.

Quickly, he scrambles to his knees.]

You think it's a fish?
apropergent: (When the joyous and sad times fade)

[personal profile] apropergent 2012-09-01 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Unless it's a very diligent boot, then I'm inclined to believe it is.

[he makes sure Yuuta's got stable footing and a good grip on his fishing rod before Layton even thinks of letting go. The last thing anyone needs is for fishing rod and/or fisher to end up in the water]

Dear me, it certainly feels like a sizeable catch on this line.
isolates: (nope not flustered at all)

[personal profile] isolates 2012-09-01 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
This better be worth it then--! [He starts to attempt to reel the fish(?) in. Whatever it is, it's definitely putting up quite a fight and admittedly, Yuuta has no clue what to actually do when fishing. But maybe beginner's luck will be on his side.]
